Who writes the guides

Meet our editors

Three people write and edit everything on Fabric Stain Removers. We don't put the products we write about through our own wash, and we don't pretend to. The work is reading care labels, directions, warnings, ingredient lists and buyer reviews, sorting those reviews by stain and fabric, lining products up side by side, and updating the rankings when prices or products change. Every guide names the person who wrote it and the person who edited it.

Abigail Novak

Senior editor

Abigail is the senior editor of Fabric Stain Removers. She decides which products make each ranking, reads the directions on the back of the bottle before the claims on the front, and checks every pick against the care-label symbols it has to live with. Her soft spot is the dry-clean-only blouse that nobody wants to ruin.

  • Reading care-label symbols
  • Delicates and dry-clean-only pieces
  • Ink and makeup
  • Set-in stains and the dryer
  • Keeping the rankings current

Luis Ferreira

Everyday stains writer

Luis writes the guides for the stains that happen every week: coffee on the commute, grease from the pan, grass on school trousers, red wine at dinner. He lines up sprays, sticks, pens and soap bars by what their directions ask of you, and reads owner reviews for one thing above all: did it come out in the first wash?

  • Coffee, tea and red wine
  • Grease and cooking oil
  • Grass and mud on school and sports clothes
  • Sprays, gels, sticks and soap bars side by side
  • Pens and wipes for the bag

Monica Ashby

Ingredients & safety editor

Monica is the one who reads the ingredient list and the warnings. She writes the guides on enzymes, bleach, blood, sweat and deodorant marks, and when she edits, she looks for anything a label says to keep away from wool, silk or colours. Her rule: a product is only as gentle as the exclusions printed on its back.

  • Enzyme removers and what they break down
  • Oxygen vs chlorine bleach
  • Blood, sweat and deodorant marks
  • Warnings and fabric exclusions on the pack
  • Fragrance-free and sensitive-skin claims
